Across the Universe is a 2007 musical film directed by Julie Taymor and set for a North American release on September 14, 2007. It is an original story which incorporates the songs of The Beatles. It stars Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess, from a screenplay by Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement. A fictional love story set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. A combination of live action and painted and three-dimensional animation, the film is paired with many Beatles songs that defined the time.
Other notable members of the cast include Bono as Dr. Robert, Eddie Izzard as Mr. Kite (a circus owner), Dana Fuchs as the musician Sexy Sadie, Halley Wegryn Gross as Max's girl, and Salma Hayek as a nurse.
